Having outgrown its existing facilities, the Justice Building in Albany's Empire State Plaza, required a renovation worthy of its significance as a modernist landmark and as the home of the Intermediate Appellate Court for upstate New York.

Clad in titanium panels and clear glass, the new conference room addition provides a crisp, disciplined update to the justice building's original modernist expression. Wood paneling and a central lay light uplift the windowless interior courtroom while echoing the intention of the exterior marble cladding. The ceiling height increased five feet; the new judges' bench curves, thereby improving sightlines for the five-judge appellate panel. The NY State office of General Services Agency Preservation Officer reviewed and approved this new addition.
