To enhance the clarity of the unique organization of the New York State Appellate Court - 4th Department, our design creates an intimate, balanced space between the judges' bench and the attorney's desks, placing the area beneath a skylight and clad- ding the concave wall behind the bench in the same rich wood as the interior walls.

The design also wraps a circular courtroom rail around the proceeding area, setting it apart from the spectator spaces, which may be adjusted for various size audiences. In addition to emphasizing the symbolic organization of the space, the skylights and surrounding clerestory windows provide upward and outward links to daylight in an otherwise interior room. RicciGreene was commissioned by the developer in this design/build project to design two new courtrooms. Working in association with The DeWolf Partnership, we designed functional interior spaces that elegantly incorporate the building's exterior facade style and express the unique structure of the Appellate Court.
