Maine Youth Center: Secure Juvenile Unit

The Maine Youth Center, established in 1853, is the state's only correctional facility for juveniles. Located on a 300-acre campus in South Portland, this minimum-security facility serves a male and female population ages 11 to 18.

RicciGreene Associates, in association with Allied Engineers, was commissioned to design a new secure facility for 30 high-risk, treatment-resistant juveniles, in a new wing adjoining the existing high security unit. The three resulting pods are based on modified direct supervision, each with its own self-contained educational and recreational areas. To create some sense of normalcy for the families and youths, a "family style" visiting area provides a relaxed and home-like setting for both juveniles and family members.
